Our 4 Day Walking Breaks, whether during the weekend or other days of the week, are an ideal way to experience the variety of terrain and culture of Dumfries and Galloway.


Each day’s walk, whether circular or linear, is in a different location. Walks can be from half to a full day giving you the opportunity to also look around the area using our up to date information. You can use your own car for transport or we can assist with our minibus.

Below we outline three 4 day walking breaks with different grade options - Easy, Moderate and Strenuous.  These relate to the walk distance and difficulty. You can walk either day first.


We have an extensive selection of other walks in the region which we can incorporate into a 4 day walking break, so If you have specific requirements for a 4 day walking break, just let us know and we will respond with an outline itinerary and a price quote.


Format

- After arrival, we will meet you at your first night’s accommodation base where we provide and go over your Walk Information Pack including route maps and daily itineraries with you.
Your first day’s walk starts after breakfast the following day when, if required, we provide transport.
After your third nights stay and the third day’s walk, you can either depart or stay another night if you wish.


Transport

- Walk tranport prices (drop off at walk start and pickup at end) are shown separately in case you wish to use your own car for circular walks. For linear walks, using our minibus, we are able to drop off at the start point and pickup at end or even part assist with public transport if you wish.


Prices

- include 4 nights accommodation at our 4 star Summerhill B&B subject to availability, or other selected B&B's in and around Castle Douglas, the welcome meeting and provision of the walks and local Information pack and transport if required.
We can also arrange hotel and other accommodation in other areas and the welcome meeting can be optional - prices amended asccordingly.
10% discount for groups of 4 or more.


4A - Solway Coastal and Classy.



Start – Any day of the week.
Distance – from 2 to 6 miles with longer options.
Grade – Easy.
Comments – A leisure walking break using either local B&B's or top quality hotels for accommodation. Luggage transfer costs are also included.
Price – £205 p.p. in B&B's (assuming two sharing). Around £325 for hotels (tbc) depending on season. Transport/Luggage - £95 plus £10 p.p.


Heston Island from Balcary Bay

Summary

- You can stay in B&B’s for this walking break, some of the finest hotels in the area. For hotels, the 3 gold star rated Cavens Country House Hotel is an ideal base for a fairly flat Solway Coast shoreline and track walk visiting the John Paul Jones museum along the way.  A RSPB nature reserve can be a short walk before moving on to the Scottish Riviera with several walk options and the Barons Craig being a superbly located hotel.
You continue along the coast to Balcary Bay area where we drop you off before taking your luggage on to your B&B or the Balcary Bay Hotel.
On your last day we bring you back to Castle Douglas with Threave Garden and Castle walk options with maybe a tour end beer at Sulwath brewery in the town.


4B - Woodland Walks and More.



Start – Any day of the week.
Distance – from 4 to 8 miles with longer options.
Grade – Moderate,
Comments – Four popular walks in Galloway.
Price – £295 p.p. (assuming two sharing). Transport - £85 plus £5 p.p.


Southern Upland Way

Summary

- Although these 4 day footpath walks feature four different wooldland walking locations, there are many other features in and around these locations.
Kenick Wood, near Castle Douglas, has the red kite feeding station nearby and the daily afternoon spectacle should not be missed after a half day walk.
A Dalbeattie Wood walk can take you to the National Scenic Area coastline for a pub lunch before returning.
The Cally Wood at Gatehouse of Fleet provides different route options including a little known hidden tower house known as The Temple.
Kirroughtree Forest, near Newton Stewart has different grade walks and the visitor centre for refreshment.
If we arrange accommodation for you in this area, on a clear night you will also have the opportunity to see the stars in the UK’s only Dark Sky Park. We provide Dark Sky Park information and maps and other local information for all these woodland walking areas.


4C - Four Highest Hills Walks.



Start – Any day of the week.
Distance – from 6 to 11 miles with longer options.
Grade – Challenging.
Comments – Some of our most challenging walks.
Price – £315 p.p. (assuming two sharing). Transport - £115 plus £10 p.p.

Summary

- If you wish to bag some of the highest ‘local’ hills in different areas Galloway, both near the coast and in the Galloway Hills, this walking break may suit you.
You should be an experienced hill walker to do these walks. We check your ability, equipment and provide advice from the local Galloway Mountain Rescue Team.
The hills are Criffel – 569 metres, south west of Dumfries, and Screel and Bengairn – 391m, south of Castle Douglas, both with excellent views over the Solway coast to the Lake District of England on a clear day.
Further west, again near the coast is Cairnsmore of Fleet 711 m near Newton Stewart with views over The Machars area and towards the higher Galloway Hills.
The highest hill in the Galloway Hills range is Merrick, 843 m which can be walked from Glentrool. The walks can be done on any day and according to the weather.
