3 Day Walking Breaks

- ideal for a long weekend

Our 3 Day Walking Breaks, whether during the weekend or other days of the week, are an ideal way to experience the variety of terrain and culture of Dumfries and Galloway.

Each day’s walk, whether circular or linear, is in a different location. Walks can be from half to a full day giving you the opportunity to also look around the area using our up to date information. You can use your own car for transport or we can assist with our minibus.

Below we outline three 3 day walking breaks with different grade options - Easy, Moderate and Strenuous.  These relate to the walk distance and difficulty. You can walk either day first.

Kirkcudbright harbour
We have an extensive selection of other walks in the region which we can incorporate into a 3 day walking break, so If you have specific requirements for a 3 day walking break, just let us know and we will respond with an outline itinerary and a price quote.

3A - The ‘Red’ Coast, River and Loch Walks.

Start – Any day of the week.
Distance – from 2 to 6 miles with longer options.
Grade – Easy.
Comments – Three different walks with the 'red' theme - one by the coast, another at a nature reserve beside a loch and the other a town and riverside walk possibly on your route home on the last day!

Red Haven Bay

Summary -

Balcary Bay is a popular walking area and we have chosen a circular cliff side walking path with views over Heston island. Nearby, from the village, another walk takes a path round the Bay to Red Haven Bay, known with it’s red sand. With lunch in between, these two walks make for a relatively easy and pleasant walking day.
Ken Dee Marshes nature reserve with bird hides beside Loch Ken is a peaceful location with the chance to see different wildlife. As you are on the Galloway Red Kite Trail, red kites are a strong possibility with red squirrels less so. Passing the Black Water of Dee and a village, we know of a compound with red deer, including a stag to complete the red theme!
Dumfries, standing either side of the River Nith is the start of a river walk along the estuary. We recommend a good pub for lunch, Castledykes Park and nearby Crichton Estate with the magnificent church and Easterbrook Hall in the local Locharbriggs red sandstone. We advise on the various distance and characteristics of walk options on this break.

3B - New Abbey, Kirkcudbright and New Galloway.

Start – Any day of the week.
Distance – from 4 to 8 miles with longer options.
Grade – Moderate.
Comments – Visit three different small towns of character with several places of interest.
Price – £155 p.p.(assuming two sharing). Transport - £70 plus £5 p.p.

Circuit from New Galloway

Summary

- These three small towns have character and numerous places of interest as well as varying types of walks. The Waterloo Monument is one walk option with Sweetheart Abbey, the Old Corn Mill and Shambellie House costume museum attractions to visit in and around New Abbey.
Kirkcudbright artists’ town has it’s castle, harbour with fishing boats, museum and several art galleries which you can visit after or between riverside, woodland, countryside and coastal walks we know around here.
Lastly, New Galloway, as the smallest Royal Burgh in Scotland is another town of character with various riverside, countryside and hill walks in and around the town which has the Catstrand arts centre and two excellent tea rooms as refreshment places.
Our service is to ask the type and distance of walk you prefer and design your walking break to merge with each location to provide an interesting walking break to explore different parts of Galloway.

3C – Not too difficult Hills and Glens.

Start – Any day of the week.
Distance – from 6 to 11 miles with longer options.
Grade – Challenging.
Comments – We drop off each day at three 'hill walk' locations. The Fleet Valley walk ends at a pub to await pickup.

Checking the satnav at Loch Whinyeon

Summary

- Loch Whinyeon is the initial focal point of one of the day’s walks, being accessed from different directions in this national scenic Area and then down into the Fleet Valley to Gatehouse of Fleet. We discuss the options and distance to suit you.
A different part of the Southern Upland Way cross country walking route from that taken on Walk 2C is chosen, but also finishing with a pub for a pint!
Cairnsmore of Fleet hill, (711 metres), is one option or the nearby Cairnsmore of Fleet nature reserve with several walk options. This area, with the striking old railway viaduct, was featured in John Buchan’s novel, the Thirty Nine Steps and also Dorothy L. Sayers 1930’s murder mystery Five Red Herrings.
Again we recommend the best options for you to enjoy your walking break.
